If you have a love for tomatoes, or would rather make your own play food for the kids’ play kitchen, this free crochet tomato pattern is perfect. Written for an Advanced Beginner level, I think you’ll find that this works up quickly. Your kids can be playing with it the same day.

Hook Size:
5.0 mm
Other Materials Needed:
Scissors
Yarn Needle
Fiber Fill
Gauge:
15 single crochet x 13 rows = 4”

Ch – Chain
INV DEC – Invisible Decrease
MC – Magic Circle
SC – Single Crochet
Sl st – Slip Stitch
Free Crochet Tomato Pattern Instructions:
Tomato:
With Red, make a Magic Circle (or alternative.)
Round 1: 6 sc in MC. (6)
Round 2: 2 sc in each stitch around. (12)
Round 3: 1 sc in next stitch. 2 sc in next stitch. Repeat around. (18)
Round 4: 1 sc in each of the next 2 stitches. 2 sc in the next stitch. Repeat around. (24)
Round 5: 1 sc in each of the next 3 stitches. 2 sc in the next stitch. Repeat around. (30)
Round 6: 1 sc in each of the next 4 stitches. 2 sc in the next stitch. Repeat around. (36)
Round 7: 1 sc in each of the next 5 stitches. 2 sc in the next stitch. Repeat around. (42)
Round 8: sc in each stitch around. (42)
Round 9: sc in each stitch around. (42)
Round 10: sc in each stitch around. (42)
Round 11: sc in each stitch around. (42)
Round 12: 1 sc in each of the next 5 stitches. INV DEC. Repeat around. (36)
Round 13: 1 sc in each of the next 4 stitches. INV DEC. Repeat around. (30)
Round 14: 1 sc in each of the next 3 stitches. INV DEC. Repeat around. (24)
Begin stuffing the tomato.
Round 15: 1 sc in each of the next 2 stitches. INV DEC. Repeat around. (18)
Round 16: sc in the next stitch. INV DC. Repeat around. (12)
Now, finish stuffing the tomato, if necessary.
Round 17: INV DEC around. (6)
Then, fasten off, leaving a long tail to sew the hole closed and make the indent in the top of the tomato.
Creating the Indent
In order to create the indent, take your yarn, and thread down from the top of the tomato to the bottom. Weave through stitches and knot the yarn to hold the indent. Then, weave in the knot and ending tail.
Stem & Leaves:
With Jelly Bean, join yarn near the center of your indent. Chain 6. Next, sc in the 2nd chain from your hook and in the next 4 chains (5 total sc.) Sl st back into the tomato.
* Chain 4. Sl st into the 2nd chain from your hook and in the next 2 chains (3 total sl st.) * Repeat between *s 4 more times. Sl st back into the beginning of your green round to connect.
Fasten off, leaving a long tail to sew the leaves down, if necessary.
