Table of Contents

When a group of new moms get together for a weekly playdate, it’s all fun and games. Or is it? Could things really be as perfect as they seem for these wealthy, stay-at-home moms adjusting to new motherhood? Happy & You Know It by Laura Hankin follows a group of women navigating new motherhood together in upper Manhattan. Things aren’t always what they seem, though, and the cracks start to show when the group befriends the musician they hired for the playgroup.

My Overall Thoughts on Happy & You Know It by Laura Hankin

I knew I was going to love this book as soon as I saw that it included snark and humor. Those are two of the things I use to describe my personality. This book does a great job of wrapping humor, snark, and serious subjects all into one. It was very well-written, but also a quick read. This book wasn’t something I had to put a lot of thought into, which is great these days with kids around. It really is like reality TV in book form.

It also touches on the real struggles moms face: the guilt, the doubt, the decisions, and the keeping up with other moms. Becoming a first-time, or even second-time mom isn’t always as easy as the world makes it seem. Laura Hankin does a great job touching on all of these subjects in Happy & You Know It.

My Favorite Character

I was really drawn to Clare, the musician, in Happy & You Know It. Her character was so relatable as she tried to find herself after her band becoming famous right after she leaves. Now, I’ve never been in a band, but the feeling of being left behind is all too familiar as a mom, woman, or even a human in general. Add to that, her trying to fit in with the group of wealthy moms. She’s struggling to get by financially, and not a mom herself. For the most part, the playgroup women were so accepting of her and actually wanted to become her friend. This is quite refreshing to see acceptance from two sides of a coin.

Would I recommend Happy & You Know It by Laura Hankin?

Absolutely! It definitely depends on what you like to read, but if you enjoy dramatic TV shows, I would recommend this book to you. It does have mature content, so also be cautious if you’re uncomfortable with that, or for teen readers. I don’t think I’d recommend this to anyone younger than 18. However, you can read it first and determine what you’re comfortable with.
